The DJI AP100 Parachute is a safety parachute system designed for the DJI Matrice 400 drone. In the event of a failure, it activates within 600 ms, slowing the fall to less than 5 m/s, protecting people and property below the drone. Thanks to it, you can fly the Matrice 400 in C5/C6 modes - even over built-up areas and beyond line of sight (BVLOS).
The DJI AP100 Parachute is a backup safety system for the professional DJI Matrice 400 drone. It is mounted on the top of the drone and in the event of a critical failure - engine failure, loss of stability or leaving the defined zone - it automatically deploys the parachute. The drone then does not fall in free fall, but in a controlled manner, at a speed below 5 m/s.
For pilots flying over cities, infrastructure, or near people, a parachute is not an optional extra. It is a condition without which such a flight is usually not possible at all.
It enables flights that would otherwise not be permitted. Combined with the Matrice 400, the AP100 helps meet the requirements of the C5/C6 (and UK5/UK6) classes of the European EASA regulation. This opens up the standard STS-01 (flight over built-up areas) and STS-02 (flight beyond visual line of sight, BVLOS) scenarios.
Redundancy and self-powered. The system is dual-redundant and has its own power source with a battery life of approximately one hour. If the drone's main battery fails, the parachute still has its own.
Search after impact. After firing, the sound and light alarm runs for about an hour. In rapeseed, bushes or at dusk, it is the difference between an hour of searching and five minutes.
Self-check before takeoff. Health monitoring reports the system status continuously, so you can detect a parachute malfunction on the ground, not in the air.
Three activation methods. Automatically (flight anomaly or crossing the Geocaging zone), manually from the app, or via FTS — an independent flight termination circuit, separate from the main avionics of the drone.
From May 1, 2026, the Slovak Transport Authority will accept applications exclusively according to the SORA 2.5 methodology. In it, the parachute system falls under the M2 mitigation — a technical solution for a drone that reduces kinetic energy upon impact. M2 reduces the ground risk class (GRC), and that pulls the entire SAIL.
The combination of a parachute and a controlled ground area can move a project from SAIL IV to SAIL II. In ConOps, that's the difference of several dozen safety objectives that you no longer have to demonstrate. The cost of the parachute will be paid back to you before you even take off with it for the first time — just in the time spent on documentation and rounds with the office.
How it all fits into the application is discussed here:
With the Matrice 400, the AP100 helps meet the technical requirements of EASA C5/C6 (and UK5/UK6 according to the British CAA). These are the ticket to the standard scenarios: STS-01 (flight over built-up areas) and STS-02 (BVLOS). With STS, it is a declaration, not a full SORA application, so it is a significantly shorter path to legal operation.
Energy and infrastructure inspections, where you fly over power lines and substations. Mapping cities and buildings in built-up areas. Rescue and security forces deploying drones over people. And anyone who is building a BVLOS operation or is currently writing ConOps and needs to press SAIL.
The AP100 comes with a mount and mounts to the Matrice 400 without any structural changes. The assembly weighs approximately 935g including the mount. It will brake aircraft up to 15.8kg, which covers the Matrice 400 even with a full payload.
Take this into account when planning your mission: the parachute will fully deploy from a height of 30 meters. Lower above the ground, there is not enough time for the parachute to deploy and the drone will not slow down to the declared 5 m/s.
No. The AP100 is designed specifically for the DJI Matrice 400 - it uses its mounting points and communicates with the flight control system. It is not approved by DJI for other drone models.
The AP100 in combination with the Matrice 400 helps meet the technical requirements of classes C5/C6, which are a prerequisite for the STS-01 (flight over built-up areas) and STS-02 (BVLOS) scenarios. However, the parachute itself does not replace the permit - flights over people or out of sight still require the appropriate pilot license and operation approval from the Slovak Transport Authority. The entire procedure is discussed in the guide to a specific category.
Yes. The parachute system is classified as mitigation M2 in the SORA 2.5 methodology - a technical solution for a drone that reduces kinetic energy upon impact. It thus reduces the ground risk class and, in combination with a controlled ground area, can move the project from SAIL IV to SAIL II. Details in the SORA 2.5 guide.
Not always, but almost always, it is worth it. For flights over built-up areas or BVLOS, a parachute is either directly required (C5/C6, STS), or it significantly reduces the SAIL and thus the number of safety objectives that you have to demonstrate to the Transport Authority in ConOps.
The parachute fully deploys from a height of approximately 30 meters above the ground. Below this limit, it does not have enough time to fully deploy.
The stabilized descent speed is up to 5 m/s. This is the speed at which impact significantly reduces the risk of serious injury to people under the drone.
The AP100 has its own independent power source with a backup time of approximately 1 hour. The parachute can deploy even if the drone's main battery fails.
In three ways: automatically upon detection of a flight anomaly or leaving the Geocaging zone, manually by the pilot from the application, or via an independent flight termination system (FTS).
Yes, slightly. The assembly weighs approximately 935g, which will affect flight endurance similarly to other payloads of comparable weight.
After each launch, the parachute must be professionally repacked and checked. Do not repack it yourself - contact us and we will advise you on the procedure.
